Street Art of Fruitvale

Street art fascinates me as an artifact of an urban-DIY mentality. This research began with the investigation of movements through the Fruitvale region of South Oakland. I mapped the roads that Google Maps tracked due to frequency and consistency of use. From this point, I began to investigate the conditions of street art in respect to these traffic patterns. A condition of perpendicularly fractal growth appeared instead of the expected nodal pattern.
From this exploration, I sought to understand the placement and layering of street art. Unsanctioned accessibility and visibility proved to be linked and symbiotic. To create form from these conditions, I utilized clear acrylic as a material to diagram the visibility projections with space. I started with a conventional understanding of projecting surface and paired it with an abstract spatial arrangement. From this study, I created an inverse of surface projection in which painted surfaces exist within the object projected upon.
Thanks for enjoying my work!
